The Accidental Prime Minister: Congress objects to Anupam’s film, demands prior screening, says ‘other options’ available too

The Maharashtra Youth Congress on Thursday raised objections to Anupam Kher’s upcoming film The Accidental Prime Minister and has demanded prior screening of the film. They have demanded that the party’s office bearers should be allowed to watch the film prior to its release and declared that they will resort to “other options” if their demands are not met.

Reportedly, the youth wing had written a letter to the makers of the film and raised objections to the “incorrect presentation of the facts” and has demanded for a prior screening so that they can ascertain that no scenes are factually incorrect in the film. This development came on the heels of the release of the trailer.

The statement read, “Looking at the trailer of the movie it is understood that the facts have been played with and presented in an incorrect manner with regards to Ex-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress Party to malign the image of Congress Party which is not acceptable to us.”

The statement further warned the makers of dire consequences if the film is released without prior screening. The statement further stated, “If the said movie is released without prior screening for our office bearers and without making necessary changes recommended by us, it will be understood that you are doing this deliberately and we have other options open to stop the screening of the same across India.”

Anupam’s film The Accidental Prime Minister is based on the life of former economist and India’s 13th Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who served as the PM in two full terms. He served as PM from 2004 to 2014 under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government but came under a lot of flak for being a puppet Prime Minister and that too a silent one. The film is the screen adaption of the book of the same name written by Sanjay Baru who served at Singh’s advisor during his official tenure. The film is slated to release on January 11, 2019 and also stars Akshaye Khanna as Sanjay Baru and Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi.
