I have always been the quintessential rule-breaker: Ayushmann Khurrana on his hatke choice of films

Ayushmann Khurrana has truly arrived in Bollywood. With four back-to-back releases, he has cemented his place in the Hindi film industry. He is on cloud nine after giving two consecutive hits in the form of AndhaDhun and Badhaai Ho last year. While having a professional high he had a scare in his personal life when his wife Tahira Kashyap was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. However, the actor who has got loads of praise for his choice of films spoke to a leading daily about being the quintessential rule-breaker and Mr. Dependable of the industry.

During the interview, he was asked whether he likes the tag Mr. Dependable of Bollywood, to which Ayushmann replied, “It feels great because I have stuck to my guns after a few initial hiccups following Vicky Donor. I’ve made choices that have appealed to my sensibilities without going with a certain formula or the convention. I have always been the quintessential rule-breaker, which has worked in my favour. It’s heartwarming because it is a validation that I received.”

He further added, “It’s important to be a rule-breaker in this day and age because we need to churn out content that is radical, has no reference point and is out-of-the-box. And to do that, you have to be someone who defies the norms. I’ve been like that from my first film itself. The choices that I’ve made may seem difficult or different to my contemporaries on paper, but I went ahead with them and reaped benefits. Being a rule-breaker has been my USP. The dependable tag has come with the box-office success and the fact that my last four films have performed well. It’s more a commercial tag than anything else.”

Ayushmann reaped loads of acclaim for his blind act in Sriram Raghavan’s murder-mystery AndhaDhun and a confused and embarrassed man coming to terms with his parents’ middle-age pregnancy in Badhaai Ho. He will be next seen in Dream Girl opposite Nushrat Bharucha which also promises to be a rib-tickling comedy.
