A little over a week before its release on January 18, the title of Emraan Hashmi’s Cheat India has been changed to Why Cheat India after a last-minute objection from Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Reportedly, the Censor Board’s examining committee felt the title was misleading and thus, needs to be changed before the film hits the silver screens.
In an official statement, the producers of the film claimed, "The CBFC had concerns about the title Cheat India. We had an extensive conversation with the Examining Committee and Revising Committee regarding the proposed change as the film has been in public domain for a year, and more importantly, because the theatrical teaser, trailer and television promos had already been certified with the original title. This would lead to dual communication a week before the release."

Given the lack of time and CBFC's clear objection, the makers apparently had no choice but to mutually agree to the new title, Why Cheat India.
Earlier too, the film made headlines after the makers had rescheduled the release date in order to allow solo release of Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Thackeray. The film was first slated to release on January 25, 2019. And now both the original title and the release date has been altered.
The Emraan starrer revolves around the malpractices prevalent in the Indian education system and stars Shreya Dhanwanthary as the female lead.
