Would love to make a homosexual love story with two leading actors: Karan Johar

Karan Johar is the man with the golden touch. After resurrecting his production house Dharma Productions to the number one position in the film industry today, the filmmaker has come out as one of the most influential celebrities. Currently, at Davos in Switzerland for the ongoing World Economic Forum 2019, Karan gave an interview where he spoke on various subjects, right from the controversy around Hardik Pandya’s and KL Rahul’s comments on his chat show Koffee With Karan to sharing his views on the LGBTQ community and their rights.

When asked how Karan would like to contribute to the LGBTQ community in India, Karan said, “Being a leading filmmaker, I can make movies on the subject. I would love to make a homosexual love story and would want to cast two leading actors in the film. I don't have in mind specific names of the actors I want to cast in the film, but I surely want to make such a film."

Karan had actually directed a film in 2013 titled Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh for Bombay Talkies. The film was based on homosexual love and the feeling of being trapped in a heterosexual marriage is like. Randeep Hooda and Saqib Saleem played the same-sex lovers in the film. The film was appreciated by the critics and the audience alike. Talking about his ambitions he said, “I am ready to make a legit gay story, but I really hope the Indian audience is ready to accept it. I would want to start working on it right after I am done directing Takht, which is likely to hit the theatres in 2020."

Interestingly, a mainstream Bollywood film Ek Ladko Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is about to release on February 1 that deals with same-sex lesbian love. It stars Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla in the lead. However, Karan had produced Dostana in 2008 starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra in the lead which dealt with homosexuality fleetingly as none of the main leads were homosexuals and it was eventually a love triangle.
