Rani Mukerji has emphasized on the fact that it is necessary for mothers to work after the birth of their child, during an interview with a leading daily. After her daughter Adira was born in 2015, Rani was on a sabbatical for three years and made her comeback with Hichki in 2018, and will appear next in the sequel to her 2014 film Mardaani.
While speaking of her career, Rani said that her husband, Yash Raj Films Chief Aditya Chopra encouraged her to start working after Adira’s birth. “When I had Adira, I was happy being at home. It was my husband (Aditya Chopra), who pushed me to get back to work. And it’s just that little nudge that one needs because a certain comfort sets in, and you feel happy there,” Rani told the daily.

It is of course important to take a break after childbirth, Rani said, adding that mothers also shouldn’t feel “guilty” about pursuing their career thereafter. “During your pregnancy and after childbirth, you should give yourself that break to take care of yourself and nurture the child. Just because we are mothers, we don’t need to feel guilty about getting back to work. If that’s the case, then men, too, should feel the same. But neither should feel that because we bring up a child together,” she added.
Adira is four now and Rani said that she understands that her mom will soon begin work. At times, Adira might get upset about her mother’s absence but Rani said that situations as such can be managed. “Somewhere, my daughter also understands that her mother is going for a meeting or to work or for an interview. There may be days when she will throw a fit, but that’s alright. One has to understand that such situations will arise and you have to work around them. I think if a child knows that both her parents are working hard for her, she will also value the things she gets in life a little bit more,” Rani said.
