Essence of Coolie No.1 is the same in the new version as it is an adaptation and not a remake, says Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan has clarified that the new version of his film Coolie No.1 is an adaptation of the 1995 movie and not a remake. The 31-year-old actor’s father, filmmaker David Dhawan, who had directed the original, will also helm the new film. While promoting his upcoming film Kalank, Varun spoke about Coolie No.1 and said that the essence of the first film will be retained in the adaptation.

"When we do something like this the idea is that the essence has to be the same. But at the same time, the film is completely different. It is not a remake, it is an adaptation. But the title is the same," Varun said.

Coolie No.1 starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor in the lead roles while in the new version, Sara Ali Khan will star opposite Varun. The film is being scripted at the moment and Varun will begin shooting for it in August. "Work is on for Coolie No 1. The shoot will start in August-September,” he added.

Meanwhile, Varun also said that he was interested in signing up for Coolie No.1 because it’s a family film.

"Why I wanted to do this film is because when I watched it, I was so entertained. I had such a good time watching it. It's a family film. It's one of the funniest and most entertaining films I have ever watched. It has an amazing screenplay, done by brilliant actors then. We are adopting it, it's not a remake. I just want to try and bring that kind of fun back. That's why my father is also ready to do it. He has changed a lot of things. He has challenged himself also. He is the only one, who knows the sur for this kind of film," he added.

Reports of David Dhawan reviving his No.1 series with Coolie No.1 emerged last year while several quarters reported that Varun will star in it. After weeks of speculation, Varun confessed while speaking to leading international website BBC Asian Network earlier in March that he has signed up for the film. The first look of the film will reportedly release on Varun’s birthday, April 24.

Varun Dhawan is currently gearing up for the release of Kalank, scheduled for April 17.
