Tamil superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Darbar will clash at the box office with Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak and Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior on January 10, 2020, a leading daily reports. Director AR Murugadoss shared the first look of Darbar recently and announced Pongal 2020 as the release date - the festival, though, is on January 15, sources told the daily that the makers are planning to release the film on January 10.
“Seeing the posters with the Gateway of India in the background, this Rajini-Murugadoss collaboration looks like a Mumbai story. The megastar will be seen as a policeman after almost 25 years since Geraftaar. And the kind of avatar he portrays, going by the first look, it seems rather interesting,” a source was quoted as saying by the daily.
Rajinikanth was last seen playing a police officer on screen in the 1992 Tamil film Pandian. His other police officer role includes Alex Pandian from Moondru Mugam, which released in 1982.
Deepika, meanwhile, had shared the first look of Chhapaak, based on acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, in March and announced the release date as January 10, 2020. The film is being directed by Meghna Gulzar.
Ajay, in fact, had also made the announcement in March, as he posted on Twitter, saying, “Start the 2020 new year with me, as Tanhaji releases on Jan 10.” Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is a biopic on the life of Taanaji Malusare, a military leader in Shivaji’s army. Directed by Om Raut, the film is co-produced by Ajay and Bhushan Kumar. The film will be releasing in 3D.
Well, it looks like January 2020 will be major enough.
