It is a matter that is personal, legal and non-political and of no consequence to others: Akshay Kumar on his Candanian citizenship row

Akshay Kumar has been in the spotlight for a long time owing to be the owner of a Canadian passport. The passport once again served to be an issue of concern for the actor when the civilians of India questioned and wondered why Akshay didn't cast his vote during the Lok Sabha Election 2019 that was held in Mumbai on April 29. Akshay, on Friday, broke silence on the passport row by penning a note on Twitter and said this matter is 'personal, legal and non-political and of no consequence to others'.

Akshay also wrote that he never hid or denied the fact that he is a holder of a Canadian passport and informed that he hasn't visited Canada in the last seven years. The actor, who through his films aims to spread the message of patriotism and progress said he rightfully and dutifully pays all Indian taxes and he had to never prove his love for the country. He said he finds it disappointing to see his citizenship to get converted into a controversy. While closing the note, he added he will continue contributing to the country and make India stronger.

The controversy surrounding Akshay's citizenship resurfaced after the actor conducted a 'non-political' interview of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. The passport row caught fire soon again when his absence from the polling booth made netizens think that it was due to his alleged Canadian citizenship. Earlier in 2017, Akshay, in an interview with a leading news channel, said that he has been bestowed with an honorary citizenship by the Canadian Government, and hence, he carries the Canadian citizenship.

Akshay has featured in many films like Kesari, Baby, Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty and Airlift, with patriotism as a theme.
