While Ajay Devgn’s new film De De Pyaar De, co-starring Tabu and Rakul Preet Singh has been praised for its comical take on May-December relationships, several quarters also censured the Akiv Ali-directed project for the sexist jokes that most of the dialogues included. Tabu, however, doesn’t agree that De De Pyaar De has a sexist undertone and instead, told a leading daily, that the film stars strong female characters.
"Akiv (Ali, director) has offered an interesting take on relationships. Once you see it in the context of the film and not just the trailer, things become a lot clearer. The movie hasn't been made with an intention to be sexist. In fact, the female characters in the film are strong; they take a stand and make their own decisions. So I'd like people to watch the movie and then comment,” Tabu, asked about the ‘sexist undertone’ in the film, told the daily.
De De Pyaar De is based on Ajay’s Ashish’s relationship with a young woman, played by Rakul Preet Singh – she is 50 and he is 26. Tabu has been cast as Ashish’s former wife.
Speaking about the film, Tabu also said that writer-producer Luv Ranjan wrote the script of De De Pyaar De with her particular character in mind. De De Pyaar De is a “light take” on separation, she asserts.
"It's motivating when scripts are written for you. It pushes you as an artiste to stay true to the faith that the person has shown in you. De De Pyaar De talks about divorce, children affected by separation, a young girl's attraction to an older man and her conflict with his past. Bollywood films have always portrayed separation in a serious manner, but we have offered a light take on it,” Tabu added.
De De Pyaar De will release on May 17.
