Supreme Court issues notice to Centre on plea to regulate content on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video

Supreme Court, on Friday, has issued a notice to the Centre regarding the regulation of content streamed on Over-The-Top media platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to name a few. If reports of a leading daily are to be believed, the decision came under the light of a petition filed by an NGO named Justice for Rights that claimed the platforms telecast shows full of 'vulgarity, religiously forbidden and morally unethical' content. The Public Interest Litigation filed also claims that the digitals streaming platforms have violated provisions of the Indian Penal code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. The NGO also alleged the platform to stream "uncertified, sexually explicit and vulgar" content.

Tweeting this news, ANI wrote, "Supreme Court issues notice to Centre on a plea seeking framing of guidelines by the government to regulate the functioning of online media streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Online Curated Content Providers (OCCPs) including Netflix, Hotstar, Voot, Arre, Sonyliv and ALTBalaji formed a self-regulatory code together to regulate video streaming content in January this year. OCCPs voluntarily signed a Code of Best Practices under the aegis of Inter and Mobile Association of India. Back in February this year, the same plea was dismissed by the Delhi High Court.
