'When I make a lady cop film, they will fight villains': Rohit Shetty reacts to criticism for not making female-led films

Rohit Shetty, in an interview with a daily, said that he has plans to make a female cop film to complete his Singham universe and affirmed that he is developing a story on those lines. The filmmaker revealed the same in his response to criticism for etching female characters that have precious little to do in his films. "Why don't people discuss Chennai Express [2013] or Dilwale [2015] when they are debating about the female characters in my films? I have my hero to do all the action, so I can't be making the actresses fight. When I make a lady cop film, they will fight villains. We are developing a film along those lines," he said.

Well, we are certainly excited to see how that turns out.

Rohit's Shetty's 2018's Ranveer Singh-starrer Simmba was a follow-up to his hit Singham franchise. Now taking his idea of cop universe further, Rohit kicked off the shoot of Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, in Goa last week. Sharing his excitement to work with Akshay, he said, "Twenty-seven years ago, I was an assistant director on Akshay's Suhaag [1992], and today, I am directing him. So, there is a sense of achievement. When he is on the set, he is immersed in his work." He further confirmed the presence of Ajay Devgn and Ranveer in the climax of Sooryavanshi, Rohit added, "Now, I want to expand this cop universe. We are writing a story in which all three heroes will appear together."

Sooryavanshi is backed by Rohit Shetty Picturez in association with Dharma Productions and Cape of Good Films. Produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Aruna Bhatia, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Rohit, it is slated to release on May 22, 2020.
