Shahid Kapoor explains how Kabir Singh is different from his Udta Punjabi character Tommy Singh

Shahid Kapoor, who is all set to play a brilliant yet impulsive young surgeon who falls into a path of self-destruction after the love of his life is forced to marry another man in Sandeep Vanga's Kabir Singh, recently spoke about how his character in Kabir Singh is different from his Udta Punjab character Tommy Singh.

Recently, Shahid told a magazine that Tommy Singh is self-obsessed, but Kabir Singh is the opposite. He said, "Kabir Singh’s reasons to do things aren’t selfish... While Tommy Singh is an empty guy, who’s self-obsessed. He only thinks about himself and later realises that he needs to do something for someone else. Kabir is the opposite. He loves so purely that he actually destroys himself in that emotion and becomes self-destructive."

The actor also feels that though the trailer appears dark, Kabir Singh is a happy film. He said, "As a subject in totality, it’s a happy film. It's a romantic film and it has its dark parts. Obviously, what will attract you in the promos are these edgy scenes but the film has a lot more going for it."

In Udta Punjab, Shahid played a drug-addict rockstar Tommy Singh while in Kabir Singh, the actor plays the role of a self-destructive lover.
