‘The story did not sit with me, it made me cringe at points’, says Sharmin Segal on Shahid Kapoor’s and Kiara Advani’s ‘Kabir Singh’

There has been a mild uproar on social media ever since Shahid Kapoor’s and Kiara Advani’s film Kabir Singh released and celebrities like Sona Mohapatra, Vani Tripathi Tikoo have come forward to slam the film. Now, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece, actress Sharmin Segal who will be making her debut in the upcoming film Malaal spoke about her views on Kabir Singh.

Comparing her own character of Aastha in Malaal to that of Kiara’s Preeti in Kabir Singh, Sharmin said, “There is strength in Aastha's silence in Malaal on some level, which I did not see in Kabir Singh. The second she (Kiara's Preeti in Kabir Singh) let him slap her... (and after that she has begged him to not leave her). That was the moment when I was like why, why... With the amount of stuff that is going on in our country, where women are trying to get empowered... I liked Kiara Advani in the film as an actor. She gave her performance. Shahid Kapoor exceeded his performance. I really liked Shahid in the movie but the story did not sit with me. It made me cringe at points.”

Kabir Singh which is an official Hindi remake of Telugu hit Arjun Reddy has fetched Rs 200 crore at the box office. However, the film has been panned by many critics and received tremendous backlash for showing misogynistic and violent behaviour towards the fairer sex. In fact, even Shahid was questioned for his choice of taking up such a negative role and sending out a wrong message to society.
