'I did 17 films with him, even his son Varun will not do that': Govinda lashes out at David Dhawan

Back the 90s, the jodi of director David Dhawan and actor Govinda was considered to be a sure shot route to a blockbuster. The duo worked together for 17 films and gave the audience som unforgettable films like Saajan Chale Sasural, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Coolie No 1, Hero No 1 and Shola Aur Shabnam, among others. They last worked together in Partner, which released in 2007. However, their perfect partnership came to an end and due to reasons unknown, David and Govinda decided to part ways.

In a recent interview with a channel, Govinda opened up on his spat with David and lashed out at the filmmaker when he was accused of not living up to his relation with the Judwaa 2 director. "He can ask me this question only when his son (Varun Dhawan) makes 17 films with him. I do not think his son will ever do 17 films with him, because he is, after all, David Dhawan's son. He is educated. I never realised the meaning of doing 17 films with a director," Govinda said. Revealing that it was Sanjay Dutt who asked him to give work to David, Govinda quipped, "It was Sanjay Dutt who told me to give work to a fellow Punjabi (David Dhawan). I used to give work to fellow Punjabis at that time. I liked David and did many hit films with him. I did not even treat my relatives as well as I treated him. Even with my brother, who is a director, I did not do 17 films."

Govinda went on to reveal that he discussed the subject of the 2013 film Chashme Baddoor with David, but he decided to cast Rishi Kapoor in it instead of him. "I told him the subject of Chashme Baddoor and he started the film with Rishi Kapoor. And when he was shooting the film, I called him and he said, 'Tu sun toh mein kaise film bana raha hoon.' Then I said, 'Tu mujhe kehta toh - subject bhi utha lia'," said Govinda.

Last but not the least, Govinda disclosed the the real reason behind their fallout and said he had approached David for a project but was "hurt" by his negative response. "After I left politics, I told my secretary to keep the phone speaker on, so that I could listen to what he (David Dhawan) was saying. I heard David saying, 'Chi-Chi (Govinda's nickname) is questioning a lot.' He was telling my secretary, 'I do not want to work with Govinda anymore. Tell him to do some small bit roles.' This shocked me and I decided never to work with him," adding, "I do not think he is that same David Dhawan who I used to know."

David Dhawan is currently remake his 1995 blockbuster Coolie No 1, which featured Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, with his son Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan.
