It is old news that Deepika Padukone will be playing the role of Kapil Dev’s wife Romi Dev in Kabir Khan’s sports drama ’83. Her onscreen husband will be played by her real-life hubby Ranveer Singh who is headlining the ensemble cast as Kapil Dev. Talking about her role in the film as Deepika was one of the last cast members to be finalized, she told an international magazine that she kept the big news a secret from Ranveer as a necessary diplomacy between an actor wife and her husband.
Talking about her stint as Romi, Deepika said that she didn’t inform Ranveer herself about being cast in the film. She said, “Because he was in the movie (already) as an actor, I felt like he needed to hear from the director that I was his co-star.” Deepika, who is a co-producer on the film, was drawn to the film as his father Prakash Padukone is an eminent Badminton player.
According to Deepika, she was keen to tell the story of “the sacrifices that a wife or family needs to make to enable (an) athlete to achieve his goals. I’ve seen it so closely with my parents. I understand how important that support system is in the life of someone extremely ambitious.”
’83 is based on India’s first World Cup win in 1983. The team that was led by Kapil Dev were underdogs but eventually triumphed beating clear favourites West Indies in a thrilling final match. The film is slated to release on April 10, 2020.
