There is some good news for Gulzar fans as his unreleased film Libaas is all set to hit the theatres on his 83rd birthday this year. The film was made in 1988 but never saw the light of the day as it has been languishing in the archives of the Directorate of Film Festivals. The film will be released under Zee Classic’s brand proposition Woh Zamaana Kare Deewana. The channel announced the release of the film in a statement on Friday.
Libaas stars Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi and is based on Gulzar’s own short story Seema from his Raavi Paar collection of prose. The film also stars Raj Babbar, Sushma Seth, Utpal Dutt, Annu Kapoor and Savita Bajaj. The film’s music had been composed by legendary music director RD Burman. The film was produced by Vikas Mohan. His sons Amul Vikas Mohan and Anshul Vikas Mohan are releasing the film now.
Listen to a song from the film:
Amul told PTI, “I’m lucky to be a part of this project. It couldn’t be released at that time for some reason. This was my father’s life-long dream and I’m happy it’s finally coming true. The film will be in theatres by the end of this year. We will announce the release date in a few weeks, after further discussion.”
Libaas is the story of a theatre director Sudhir (Naseeruddin) and his actor wife Seema (Shabana) whose life appears picture-perfect but underneath there is turmoil and tribulations as appearances in showbiz are hardly ever true. Libaas will be distributed by Zee Studios in India. It has previously been screened at International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa after a gap of 26 years on November 22, 2014, and at the International Film Festival at Bangalore in January 1992.
