The cutting down of the Aarey Forest in Mumbai for a metro car shed within hours after the Bombay High Court dismissed all petitions against the move has angered Bollywood celebs to such an extent that they are venting out their anger against the establishment on social media. For the last couple of months, celebs like Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Farhan Akhtar and several others had been asking the government to not cut down the trees in the Aarey Forest but their petitions fell on deaf ears.
Today, Farhan, Shraddha, Alia Bhatt, Varun, Dia Mirza, Nimrat Kaur, Sidharth Malhotra and several others expressed their displeasure at the deforestation. Shraddha had even stood with the protesters with banners so that the felling of trees could be stopped but to no avail. Check out the tweets of the celebs below.
Cutting trees at night is a pathetic attempt at trying to get away with something even those doing it know is wrong. #Aarey #GreenIsGold #Mumbai

There's always been a conflict between development & conservation. Yes, the city needs to build infrastructure to support a growing population. But the city also needs trees & parks & greenery. We need to protect nature like life depends on it. Because it does.#LetMumbaiBreathe

400 trees have been cut in the dead of the night. As citizens sang and joined hands in unity pleading to STOP this massacre. Can’t you see they are UNITED by love!?! Love for nature. Love for our children and our future. #Aarey #ClimateAction #ActNow #ChangeIsComing pic.twitter.com/7XCwSeaqDT

This is heartbreaking news. With such an outcry to stop the cutting of trees why is this being allowed mumbai has done enough for the people in power to realise cutting down aarey is something the citizens don’t want https://t.co/df6llNejGX

Why were trees cut in the dead of the night ? Who gets rich(er) because of this metro car shed? Everything about this is shady from the get go, including how the first signatures for the tree felling were obtained. https://t.co/cnFgxgFmKK

Heard the terrible news about the cutting down of trees in #AareyForest started last night! The ecological imbalance this can cause is beyond control & it must stop. I urge the authorities to help #SaveAarey if not for us, for our future generations @narendramodi @Dev_Fadnavis

Aarey is not a forest and we are incredible human beings. #Facts2019

In a fair, ethical, just and humane world it should be the other way around. The state should be protecting the trees from the men with machetes who arrive cloaked in darkness. Alas, this is the world we live in. One without a moral compass & conscience. God help us all! https://t.co/5jA63cx8Yy

We mourn the demise of 3000 trees at #AareyForest. It’s a sad day for all those who considered trees as part of their lives, who considered trees as one of d biggest gift of Nature God. MUMBAI will pay the price for this destruction and we will suffer helplessly. @ConserveAarey

The petition was against the felling of 2,700 trees in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony to make the metro car shed. However, the people are divided about this as many feel that Metro is the need of the hour since the local trains are way too crowded and hazardous for the common man and the city’s bursting population needs the Metro for the commute.
Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar had supported the project.
