Ever since the scrapping of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ambitious project with Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt titled Inshallah surfaced across media, fans of the trio were left sheerly disappointed. Owing to certain creative differences, the collaboration of Salman and the filmmaker after a long hiatus met an unfortunate end before the project could even kick off the floor. However, the buzz surrounding Alia teaming up with Sanjay was doing the rounds soon after the Kalank actress made frequent visits to the latter's office a few days after Inshallah got shelved. And as fans were keeping on their toes for a piece of big news, the makers, on Wednesday, announced and confirmed Alia's and Sanjay's maiden collaboration.
Titled Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia, on Twitter, confirmed her participation and said that the film is going to be special for her. Gangubai Kathiawadi, which was earlier rumoured to be titled Gangubai Kothewali, will be directed by Sanjay, who will also co-produce the film with Jayantilal Gada of Pen India Ltd.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is said to be based on a brothel madam from the red light area, Kamathipura in Mumbai. She is said to have changed the face of the region and is one of the most remembered women from the history of Mumbai. Gangubai is believed to have been pushed into prostitution at a very young age and became the most influential pimp, having served several renowned criminals from the city. The film is inspired by a chapter from the book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai. As per PeepingMoon.com sources, the filming will commence early November this year.
