On Friday, the nation ended the week with the tragic and unfortunate news of veteran actress Shaukat Kaifi passing away. Shaukat, who gave the film industry gems like M.S. Sathyu’s Garm Hava, Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan and Sagar Sathadi’s Bazaar breathed her last in her 90s after keeping unwell for a prolonged period. The veteran actress, writer and an eminent theatre personality passed away at her Mumbai residence and is survived by her daughter, actress Shabana Azmi, son, noted cinematographer, Baba Azmi, daughter-in-law Tanvi Azmi and son-in-law Javed Akhtar.
Speaking of Shaukat Aapa, she was married to Urdu poet and film lyricist Kaifi Azmi and was said to have been the guiding force behind the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and Progressive Writers Association, the cultural wings of the Communist Party of India (CPI)
