First Look: Kajol to mark her short film debut with 'Devi', a poignant tale of nine oppressed women; Shruti Haasan and Neha Dhupia and others join the cast

Kajol is undoubtedly one of the most talented actresses Bollywood has ever seen. From romantic to thriller and even comedy, she has done it all. Now, after leaving behind an indelible mark of her acting prowess in full-fledged feature films, Kajol is all set to venture in short films with Devi. As per reports, the short film revolves around the tale of nine oppressed women who belong to different strata of society and face the dilemma of sharing their space and stories in the social circumstance wherein tragedy and pain is normal. Apart from orbiting around a poignant narrative, the film will celebrate women power. Joining Kajol in Devi are Shruti Hassan, Neha Dhupia, Neena Kulkarni, Mukta Barve, Sandhya Mhatre, Rama Joshi, Shivani Raghuvanshi and Yashaswini Dayama. Talking about the short film, Kajol, in an interview, told that the story needs to be communicated.

“I couldn't have chosen a better subject than Devi for my first short film. It's a powerful statement, written very well by Priyanka. It's a poignant film, one that needs to be shared with the world, especially today. My character, Jyoti, is vastly different from me in many ways, but uncannily we share a lot too. In today's times when gender discrimination, abuse and violence is being spoken about vociferously, films like Devi are far more relevant and I am glad to have got the opportunity to participate," Kajol told.

Shruti, who is also making her short film debut with Devi, said she loved the concept when she heard it for the first time. She further added that though the film is disturbingly poignant, it gives out an important and powerful message. "I loved the concept of the film when I heard it. We often talk about a sisterhood and how women need to stand with each other. Devi highlights that aspect in such a lovely way, with such a powerful message. It's disturbingly poignant and that's why I knew I had to be part of it, and I couldn't have found a more perfect film to make my debut on the digital platform!" Shruti added.

Devi is directed and written by debutante Priyanka Banerjee. It is produced by Niranjan Iyengar's and Ryan Stephen's Electric Apples Entertainment.
