Urmila Matondkar makes a comparison between CAA 2019 and Rowlatt Act 1919, states 'both are black Acts in history'

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which was passed by the Parliament of India on December 11, 2019, evoked stark hate response from majority of the citizens of India. Soon after, students of various educational institutes went on a protest against CAA, which took an ugly turn when the violence took over the city of Delhi. A number of celebrities expressed their opinion on the same and joining the bandwagon recently was Urmila Matondkar. The actress-turned politician, who was at an event held at Gandhi Bhavan Memorial in Pune on the occasion of his 72nd death anniversary, voiced her say on CAA. Urmila went on to compare the act with Rowlatt Act of 1919 and told the two qualify as the black Acts in history. The Rangeela actress further added that CAA is against the poor.

“The Rowlatt Act of 1919 and the CAA of 2019 are the two acts that will be addressed as ‘black Acts’ in history. The CAA is against poor people. The Act as being stated is of course anti-Muslim. We do not want an Act which ascertains my identity and citizenship on the basis of religion. It is in our Constitution that you cannot discriminate on the basis of religion, language, gender or region,” Urmila told at the event.
