The trailer of Taapsee Pannu's upcoming film Thappad not just sent a wave across the nation but also marked the beginning of a detailed conversation that slapping the woman isn't itni si baat. The trailer, while shaking the foundations of male chauvinist films, brought to fore the topic of domestic violence and unequal treatment towards women in the country. Now, as Thappad is a few weeks away from its theatrical release, Taapsee, who plays the central character named Amrita, discussed the film, its ideology with a media agency in an interview. Clearing the fact that Thappad is solely based on domestic violence, the 32-year-old actress told that it is just one trigger that will bring out 'the elephant in the room'.
"The film is not just about domestic violence. It is just one trigger. There is a dialogue in the film which says 'I can suddenly see all the unfair things that I did not notice earlier'. So Thappad (slap) is a trigger and suddenly you see these things that were taken for granted in a relationship. We are trying to bring out the elephant in the room. Let's see how many discussions or how many awkward silences are there, after people see the film," Taapsee told.
Taapsee, who never shies away from expressing her opinion on various platforms regarding diverse topics, said that a woman is expected to tolerate injustice. She slammed the 'to-do list' for both men and women that is necessary for a relationship. "It is like there is a separate to-do list for both women and men that is expected from them in a relationship. Who decided this? Did you just blindly follow what was told to you? It is not a mistake of any one person but of everyone as a society that we are trying to normalise it," Taapsee added.
Talking about whether education and households impact domestic violence, Taapsee said it is prevalent in the society irrespective of the person's background. "It is not that such things happen in those houses where people are uneducated, this happens in educated families as well. It is happening with three women out of five. When you are growing up you are told to follow certain things. But with age, as I became independent, I realised that I am working as hard as a man of my age and I am earning well, maybe not more, but I can run my house like any other man. So why are rules different for me? I should not do certain things because I am a woman, why? When you start becoming independent, you become confident and start questioning things," Taapsee concluded.
Thappad, apart from Taapsee, stars Pavail Gulati, Dia Mirza, Ratna Pathak Shah, Tanvi Azmi, Geetika Vidya, Maya Sarao, Naila Grewal, Kumud Mishra and Gracy Goswami in the lead roles. Thappad is produced by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series along with Anubhav and Benaras Mediaworks. It is scheduled to release on February 28, 2020.
