Amitabh Bachchan, every time he collaborates with Shoojit Sircar for a film, it can be rightfully predicted that the audience will be in for a wonderful experience. After teaming up for content-driven and commercially successful projects like Piku and Pink, the actor-director duo was all set for Gulabo Sitabo. Co-starring Ayushmann Khurrana, the quirky comedy-drama set in Lucknow was scheduled to release on April 17. However, due to the Coronavirus Lockdown, the film is put on hold till the situation comes back to normalcy. Talking about the release of Gulabo Sitabo, Shoojit, during an interview with a leading daily, told that he would like his audience to watch it in theatres. He also said if the situation doesn't improve, he doesn't mind giving it an OTT opening. Shoojit added that a decision will be taken after May 3, which is the tentative date for the lockdown to lift.
“As a filmmaker, I’d want to see my film open in the theatres, but the situation today is unlike anything anyone had ever experienced. So, I’m open to a digital release if need be, but we will take a decision after May 3,” Shoojit told.
Gulabo Sitabo refers to a legendary pair of puppet sisters and a part of Uttar Pradesh's folklore. The film is apparently a takeoff on these two characters and will narrate the love-hate relationship between a tenant and his landlord. It is produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar. Gulabo Sitabo is written by Juhi Chaturvedi.
