This has to be the worst year in Bollywood’s history. Yesterday the industry lost Irrfan. This morning, Rishi Kapoor. Both to cancer. Irrfan we knew was on his last legs from the start of the week. Rishi, nobody had any clue. Perhaps not even the Kapoor Khandaan, his wife Neetu Kapoor who attended to him day and night, his son Ranbir Kapoor locked down in Mumbai by Covid-19, and daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahani based in Delhi.
The actor was admitted to the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre three weeks ago from just before the lockdown kicked in. He was suffering from cancer-related complications. Had breathing issues. Multi-organ failure. Was put on dialysis. Given blood transfusions. And then yesterday, the veteran actor was put on the ventilator when his condition got serious.

It is believed Neetu Kapoor was with him in the ICU of the hospital. And Rishi, who perhaps had some premonition of his death, reportedly summoned son Ranbir to his bedside at midnight. That was when his elder brother and senior actor Randhir Kapoor announced Rishi’s illness and admission to hospital. By 3 am, Rishi had stopped responding to the ventilator. The end came at 8:45 am this morning.
