In the wake of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, Shoojit Sircar's Gulabo Sitabo is the first theatrical film to opt for a direct-to-web release. Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead roles, the quirky comedy will release on Amazon Prime Video on June 12. With this decision of an OTT opening, theatre owners expressed sheer disappointment through statements and dissed the idea of going digital instead of waiting for theatres to open. Addressing the cinema owners' predicament, Shoojit, during an interview with a leading daily, told that the decision wasn't his personal and Gulabo Sitabo, in normal conditions, would have released in theatres itself.
"Once you've made a decision, there can be no scope for fear. It's not about being brave; the situation compelled us to adapt. When I read Inox's statement, I understood the theatre owners' point of view. If I were in their position, I, too, would have expressed my discomfort. I told them it's not a personal decision. If it weren't for the lockdown, the film would have released in theatres," Shoojit told.
Based on the legendary pair of puppet sisters that form an important part of Uttar Pradesh's folklore, Gulabo Sitabo will talk about the love and hate relationship between a landlord named Mirza and his tenant Baankey. It is produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar. The film is written by Juhi Chaturvedi.
