Makers of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair's screen adaptation of the Vikram Seth classic A Suitable Boy shared the teaser of the drama on Saturday afternoon. The series features Tabu, Ishaan Khatter and newcomer Tanya Maniktala. Tanya will play the central role of Lata, in the project adapted by Andrew Davies.
The first look teaser featuring Tabu, Ishaan and Tanya presents a charming tale taking us back to the India of 1950s. The trailer begins with Tanya (Lata) stating she never wants to get married while Ishaan (Maan), who plays a young energetic boy, who is smitten by a courtesan - Tabu (Saeeda Bai). The teaser also shows the aftermath of partition, riots, and politics on the lives of these three characters. The series also stars Rasika Dugal, Ram Kapoor, and Namit Das.
Sharing the first look of the television series, Ishaan took to Instagram and wrote, "A first sneak peek into the world of #ASuitableBoy Love will push you beyond your boundaries. Based on the best-selling novel, A Suitable Boy starts 26th July on BBC One and @BBCiPlayer."
A Suitable Boy tells the story of spirited university student Lata in 1951 at the same time as the country is carving out its own identity as an independent nation and is about to go to the polls for its first democratic general election. It is a tale charting the fortunes of four large families and exploring India and its rich and varied culture at a crucial point in its history.
The six-part BBC One drama will premier on July 26, 2020 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
