Kunal Kamra reacts to Supreme Court's contempt charges against him, says 'don’t intend to retract or apologise'

Kunal Kamra's and Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami's feud is no new news. The comedian reflected his view on the Supreme Court’s ruling on Arnab's bail request and ended up in major trouble. Attorney General KK Venugopal granted consent to initiate contempt proceedings against Kunal for his views on Thursday. A day later, the comedian reacted to the same with an open letter on Twitter to the Supreme Court judges and the Centre’s top law officer.

Refusing to be perturbed, Kunal, today, said that he will never apologise nor delete the tweet. He wrote, "My view hasn’t changed because the silence of the Supreme Court of India on matters of other’s personal liberty cannot go uncriticised. I don’t intend to retract my tweets or apologise for them. I believe they speak for themselves." The caption of his tweet was, "No lawyers, No apology, No fine, No waste of space"

Taking a jibe, Kunal suggested that the Supreme Court should utilise the time to hear cases relating to 'demonetisation petition, the petition challenging the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, the matter Of the legality of electoral bonds or countless other matters that are more deserving of time and attention'.

He added, "I had asked for replacement of the photo of Mahatma Gandhi at the Supreme Court of India with that of Harish Salve. I would like to add that Pandit Nehru photo should also be replaced with Mahesh Jethmalani."

A Mumbai-based lawyer named Rizwan Siddiquee sought KK Venugopal’s permission to initiate contempt proceedings against Kunal for his tweet slamming the Supreme Court for ordering the release of Arnab. Siddiquee went on to accuse Kamra of making “salacious and unruly” statements. Two Pune based lawyers and a law student also sought the Attorney General’s permission to initiate proceedings against Kunal.
