Hansal Mehta had directed Kangana Ranaut in 2017's heist drama, Simran. The film failed to garner a positive response. Hansal, in several media interviews and statements, has called the film a mistake. Now, once again he made a comment on Simran. Hansal, after Anna Hazare cancelled his decision of Aamaran Anshan (indefinite hunger strike) at Ralegan Siddhi against the new farm laws, joked about extending support to the social activist. 

Stating that he doesn't regret supporting Anna, Hansal said everyone makes mistakes. "I supported him (Anna) in good faith. Like I later supported Arvind. I don't regret it. All of us make mistakes. I made Simran," Hansal tweeted.

Reacting to Hansal's statement, Kangana said, "That’s true Hansal sir, even you will agree with that, I stood by you and now you saying this, feel like singing ‘ achcha sila diya tune mere payaar ka ‘"

The filmmaker hit back at the actress saying the tweet wasn't meant for her. "Firstly, the tweet wasn’t about you. Secondly, there are things that happened after the film that left me more than hurt. It made me sorely regret making the film. All said and done you remain a fine, fine actor. And you have my respect for that. And for your kindness," Hansal said.

In the past, Hansal told a publication that making Simran was a tough job. "I enjoyed Kangana’s company outside the set and I had a great time with her. We used to go out and she would always ask me to choose restaurants. We’d have a great meal together, party together, I would choose good wine, all that was fun. (But on the sets) It went out of my control completely. That’s not a happy situation to be in. Other than dealing with the fact that she (Kangana) completely took charge of the set and began directing other actors, I lost a lot of money too, which had nothing to do with her. Financially it hit me badly. I was stupid enough to sign some papers when the film was stuck for some reason, which got me into a financial and legal tangle. So almost a year-and-a-half, there was arbitration going on in court. I’ve sort of emerged back. You have to go through what you have to go through. It was tough," he said
