'Takht is not shelved. It’s just delayed,' confirms filmmaker Karan Johar

Filmmaker Karan Johar's upcoming film Takht, which was announced in 2018, is delayed, not shelved, the filmmaker has now confirmed. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Anil Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Janhvi Kapoor, and will mark Johar's return to the big-screen direction for the first time since his 2016 release, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Talking to an entertainment news website, Karan said, "Takht is not shelved. It’s just delayed.” In February 2020, Karan Johar had announced that Takht will release on Christmas 2021. He had written on Twitter, "Presenting #TAKHT. Produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar & Apoorva Mehta. Screenplay by Sumit Roy. Starring Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor AND Anil Kapoor. Releasing Christmas, 24.12.2021 (sic)." The film was first slated to release on Diwali 2020 and was later delayed to Christmas 2021.

In March 2020, PeepingMoon.com had exclusively informed its readers that almost 60 percent of Takht was to be shot in Italy. KJo had planned an entire 45-day schedule in the Tuscany city of Florence. The location, a source said, was so perfect in every way that just one set for Takht here was equal to 20 sets elsewhere. KJo was excited about the location and had locked it. The film, which will be a 70 mm magnum opus from Dharma Productions, was to shortly go on the floor and aim for a Christmas release in December 2021. But the Florence shoot was totally out of question with Italy being the worst-hit country in the world by Coronavirus.

Takht is a historical drama about the Mughal rivalry for the throne between Aurangzeb and his brother Dara Shukoh. While Ranveer Singh plays Dara, Vicky is cast as Aurangzeb. The film's multi-star cast also includes Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. It is slated for a Christmas 2021 release.
