Ahead of PM Narendra Modi's Kolkata rally, actor Mithun Chakraborty joins BJP

Veteran Bollywood and Bengali actor Mithun Chakraborty has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This came a little before Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi's rally at Brigade Parade Ground. Mithun joined the party weeks before the state Assembly polls scheduled for March-April.

BJP's state in-charge Kailash Vijayavargiya met Mithun at his residence in Belgachia locality yesterday. This sparked off the speculation. Rumours of the actor joining the BJP started doing rounds after he hosted RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at his Mumbai residence a while ago.

Mithun was sent to Rajya Sabha in 2014. However, he resigned in 2016 citing health reasons. Much before resigning, he was embroiled in the Saradha scam. He was the brand ambassador of the group that ran a ponzi scam in Bengal. Amid the probe, Mithun reportedly returned 1.19 crore to the Enforcement Directorate after tax deduction from 2 crores that he had got from Saradha Group.
