Priyanka Chopra Jonas recently grabbed headlines when she gave an interview to talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Although it was a proud moment for Indians, one of the comments that Priyanka made during the interview received a lot of backlash and jokes from the netizens.
Speaking about spirituality to Oprah, Priyanka said, “My dad used to sing in a mosque, I was aware of Islam.” The comment did not go down too well with the netizens who trolled the actress for claiming she understood Islam because of her father singing in mosques. Many argued that singing is not allowed inside mosques and that Priyanka must have confused a mosque with a dargah. Check out some tweets below:
“Sing” in a mosque maam I- you lived in a country with one of the largest Islamic population

Girlfriend, where is this mosque at? It sounds WAY more fun than the one we attended where people just came to pray. #PriyankaChopra pic.twitter.com/2qgJvb91cR

Dear @priyankachopra
How is singing in a mosque makes one aware of Islam? Do many years in India didn't let you know about muslims around you? By this logic- my dad argues cases in court so I am aware of the law. #PriyankaChopra #Oprah pic.twitter.com/gDbVG5aZT1— Chayan Sarkar (@chayansarkar87) March 20, 2021

My dad also used to sing in a Mosque. Nothing else happened, people just thought he was very weird for doing that since Masjid mein antakshari nahi khelte. https://t.co/zJz8nhHUzC

However, on the other hand, the actress’ fans argued that trolls were misquoting her words. He full statement was, “With the swirling number of religions that we have, that live within the country as well. I grew up in a convent school. I was aware of Christianity. My dad used to sing in a mosque, I was aware of Islam. I grew up in a Hindu family, I was aware of that. Spirituality is such a large part of India that you really cannot ignore it but also my family believed in having higher power, having a sense of faith. My dad used to tell me that religion is a way to get to the Supreme power. Every religion has a different face to the same direction where we are going. I am a Hindu, I have a temple in my home and I pray as often as I can but at the same time, I am a believer of the fact that a higher power does exist and I like to have faith in that.”
