The Indian entertainment industry has lost many prominent personalities in the last few months. Today, another gem left for his heavenly abode. Renowned Bengali filmmaker, poet and writer Buddhadeb Dasgupta passed away at his Kolkata residence this morning. He was 77. Dasgupta was battling a prolonged kidney ailment.
A family member confirmed the news to a leading daily and informed that Dasgupta used to go for dialysis twice a week and one of his procedures was due today. He passed away in his sleep. "He used to go for dialysis twice a week. On Thursday, he was due for his dialysis. He has a little bit of pre-dialysis discomfort, but nothing major. He died in his sleep," the family member told.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered condolence. On Twitter, she wrote, "Saddened at the passing away of eminent filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Through his works, he infused lyricism into the language of cinema. His death comes as a great loss for the film fraternity. Condolences to his family, colleagues and admirers."

Dasgupta will be remembered for films like Uttara, Bagh Bahadur, Kaalpurush amongst others. The renowned filmmaker won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali for Dooratwa (1978) and Tahader Katha(1993).
