Anu Aggarwal shot to fame with her debut film Aashiqui. Credited as an all-time blockbuster at the box office in 1990, the Mahesh Bhatt directorial made Anu and Rahul Roy overnight sensations. In 2013, Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor stepped in to play the leads in Aashiqui's official sequel. However, the film had a completely different theme and was directed by Mohit Suri. What continued was the legacy of chartbuster music.

In an interview with a leading daily, Anu spoke about Aashiqui 2 and said she thought it was a sequel to the previous film. However, she was a bit disappointed to learn that the Aditya-Shraddha starrer was completely different. "Aashiqui 2 released during the time when I was not really watching any movies but I did know about it. I was like 'Wow, now there will be Aashiqui 2!', but I had thought it was a sequel to the previous one, but I was told that's not the case and that they have just used the same title but the film was completely different. That was a bit disappointing. However, Aashiqui itself was a very popular film," Anu told.

In 2012, Rahul reacted to Aashiqui getting a sequel. He told a media agency, "I don't think one can recreate the magic of old films. Like in recent times we have seen old films which have been made again have hardly met with success. The newer version may fail to overtake the older one."

Aashiqui 2 proved to be a successful film for Aditya and Shraddha. It was their breakthrough film.
