Former Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Yashpal Sharma passed away due to a massive cardiac arrest on Tuesday at the age of 66. The former Indian batsman reportedly died of cardiac arrest at 7:40 am. He is survived by his wife Renu Sharma, two daughters Puja, Preeti and son Chirag Sharma. Jatin Sarna, who is all set to play the role of Yashpal Sharma in Kabir Khan's sports drama '83, mourned the loss of the legendary cricketer.
Now, Ranveer Singh, who will be seen playing the role of former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev in the film, has also paid his last respects. Ranveer posted a photo of Yashpal from his younger days with a heartbreak emoticon. Several fans and actors also paid their tribute in the comments section on the actor's Instagram post.
Tahir Raj Bhasin, who will be seen playing the role of Sunil Gavaskar in '83, said in a statement, "Saddened by the demise of Yashpal Sharma. A story of sheer grit and incredible sporting spirit in the history books of Indian cricket . Yashpal Sir was a rock on the pitch and a major reason for India's 1983 World Cup win. Today I remember his accomplishments and immense contributions that made the country proud . Condolences to his friends , family and fans . May he rest in peace."
Director Kabir Khan also mourned the loss and wrote, "Thank you Yashpal sir for your guidance, advice and love. You left too soon sir. We will miss you."
In a glittering cricket career, spanning over the late 70's and the 80's, Yashpal Sharma, who was born in Ludhiana on August 11, 1954, was regarded as a gifted middle-order batsman. In 37 Tests he played for India -- debut in 1979 against England -- Yashpal scored 1606 runs with two centuries (top score of 140) and nine fifties to his name at an average of over 33.
