Producer V Ravichandran to move Madras High Court against Shankar and Jayantilal Gada over the Hindi remake of Tamil film Anniyan

In April this year, Ranveer Singh announced his maiden collaboration with South filmmaker Shankar for the Hindi remake of the Tamil film Anniyan (2005). Directed by Shankar himself, psychological action thriller film starred Vikram in the lead. However, the producer of Anniyan, V Ravichandran, wasn't happy with the news. A day after the announcement, he sent a legal notice to Shankar and claimed that he owns the sole right to the story of Anniyan as its producer.

Now, months later, Ravichandran has decided to approach Madras High Court against Shankar and Jayantilal Gada, who is bankrolling the Hindi remake of Anniyan. According to a leading daily, Ravichandran has filed a complaint against Shankar with the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) and the body has promised to support him. Talking to the daily, Ravichandran said, "I am going to court against Shankar and Jayantilal Gada. They cannot make the film without my consent as I own the copyright of the film and no other person has the right over it as I am the author of the movie."

However, back in April, Shankar had issued a statement and said that the story and screenplay rights rest solely with him. Reacting to it, Ravichandran told, "He can say and claim anything, but everyone knows that ‘Anniyan’ is my movie and I hired him to direct the film."

The producer added, "SIFCC, which has been supporting me, told me to wait a little longer as they have spoken to the film association in Mumbai. But it is not Shankar who is the producer of the film but Gadaji with whom I need to have a discussion about the project."

Ravichandran said the announcement of Anniyan's Hindi remake left his in a state of shock. "I was shocked that without my knowledge, a remake of the film was announced. It must be the first time that something like this has happened in our cinema," he shared.

The title of the Hindi remake of Anniyan is yet to be announced.
