'Mughals came to India to make it their homeland, can call them refugees,' says Naseeruddin Shah, receives backlash

Naseeruddin Shah has been vocal about his opinions during interviews. Now, he once again faced a major backlash for likening Mughals to refugees on a chat show. A video of the actor talking about the Mughals has gone viral on social media and netizens were in no mood to take his statement lightly.

In the viral clip, Naseeruddin can be heard saying, "The so-called atrocities of the Mughals are being highlighted all the time. They are people who have left lasting monuments in the county, who have left the tradition of dancing, music, painting, literature. Mughals came here to make this their homeland. You can call them refugees if you like..."

Reacting to the statement, one user wrote, "Why leaving the fact that Mughals also killed hundreds of thousands of indigenous people. *That's how they alter history*" Another person tweeted, "Mughals were invaders not refugees. They were armed raiders, who visited India not to seek asylum, but to rule, taking advantage of disunity amongst the then existing Kingdoms in Indian Peninsula. They had their own culture,a sister branch of Indo Aryan culture, influence was obvious."

In September, the National Award-winning actor made headlines for his video slamming some Indian Muslims who have been sympathising with the Taliban after they took over various regions of Afghanistan.
