Bharat Ratna, National Awards and Dadasaheb Phalke Award- these were just some feathers in the hat of Lata Mangeshkar who had an illustrious career in Indian cinema. Known as India's own melody queen and the nightingale, the legendary singer lent her voice to most of the top actresses of Bollywood for years after her debut in the 1940s. From patriotic to romance, she did songs of different genres.
There was a time when Lata Didi was listed in The Guinness Book of Records. In the 1974 edition of The Guinness Book of Records, Lata Didi was mentioned as the most-recorded artist. Reportedly, she recorded 50,000 songs in 14 different languages. However, the claim was contested by legendary singer Mohammed Rafi. The entry was removed in 1991 until 2011, in which Guinness put Lata Didi’s sister as the most-recorded artist.
Lata Didi passed away this morning at Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital. She was 92 years old.
