Vijay Raaz's portrayal of trans woman in Gangubai Kathiawadi sparks debate, netizens say trans people don't get a chance

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi trailer was released on February 4. Starring Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa and others, the trailer was lauded by critics, audience and celebrities. While Alia's performance as the feisty brothel madam stood out, it was Vijay who took everyone by surprise. The actor will be seen in the role of Gangubai's rival, Raziabai.

Sharing stills from Gangubai Kathiawadi's trailer, one user wrote, "Trailer was going strong and then this guy appears and steal the show from everyone." Another person praised Vijay and said, "And while everyone has praised Alia Bhatt for #GangubaiKathiawadi, another actor that needs appreciation is Vijay Raaz. His appearance was so chilling, it gave me goosebumps #VijayRaaz - He definitely understood the assignment."

Amid all the praise and appreciation, there were people who were not happy with a cis-gender playing the role of a transgender. One person said, "Loved #GangubaiKathiawadiTrailer and it look very promising but then again another CIS male is playing a trans role. I know Vijay Raj will do it good but this is a pattern in Bollywood from a long time and maybe it's high time to change it."

Another person accused the makers of Gangubai Kathiawadi of stealing work from transgenders. The tweet read, "Bollywood must stop stealing jobs from trans people! Ashutosh Rana, Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, Vijay Raaz..the list is long and eww!."

Vijay and the makers of Gangubai Kathiawadi are yet to react to this.
