'If turban can be a choice, then why not hijab': Sonam Kapoor strongly reacts to Karnataka hijab row

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja has strongly reacted to the ongoing unrest in the state of Karnataka over whether students should be permitted to wear hijab in educational institutions. Sonam's post comes days after several women in Karnataka were heckled by protesters for wearing a hijab.

The actress, who has always been vocal about the things she believes in, shared a post on Instagram Stories, featuring a picture collage. On the left was an image of a man in a turban, with the text underneath saying, “This can be a choice.” It was juxtaposed with a photo of a woman wearing a hijab and the text below said, “But this can’t?”

At present, the Karnataka High Court is hearing a petition challenging hijab restrictions in educational institutions. In its interim order, the court said, “We request the state government and all other stakeholders to reopen the educational institutions and allow the students to return to the classes at the earliest. Pending consideration of all these petitions, we restrain all the students regardless of their religion or faith from wearing saffron shawls (Bhagwa), scarfs, hijab, religious flags or the like within the classroom, until further orders.”

The whole controversy erupted after the Karnataka government on February 5 issued an order mandating a dress code in all schools and colleges, with a ban on clothes that "disturb equality, integrity and public law and order".
