Woh aise maange, main de dunga: When Bappi Lahiri reacted to Bipasha Basu’s wish of ‘robbing’ his gold jewellery

Veteran singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri left his fans and fraternity in the state of mourning with his sudden demise today, on February 16, 2022. Bappi Da, as he was fondly referred, passed away at Mumbai's CritiCare Hospital on Tuesday night after succumbing to multiple health issues. He was 69.

Known as Bollywood’s 'Gold-Man,' Bappi Da was synonymous with all things bling. A Disco King and pop icon in his own right, the veteran singer was known for his groovy tracks and love for gold. Undoubtedly, his look was distinguished from the rest of the fraternity, all thanks to those stacks of chunky bracelets, rings and layers of heavy chains each with a pendant of a deity. This look was so loved by the film fraternity that actress Bipasha Basu wanted to ‘rob’ the music legend of his gold jewellery!

Earlier in an interview with a leading daily, Bipasha called Bappi Da ‘such an amazing person’ and wished to ‘rob him of his jewellery.’ “And every time I see him, I want to rob him of his jewellery. He wears such lovely gold jewellery; it’s full of these little Gods, and that’s something I absolutely love,” she said as reported by Hindustan Times.

In an old interview from 2007, Bappi Da reacted to this joke of Bipasha. During his appearance on a live news channel, the veteran singer laughted it off saying “No, she is very sweet. Woh aise maange, main de dunga. Chori karna nahi padega, le lo (If she just asks, I will give it to her. She won’t have to steal; she can just take it).” He added, “I like her, she is very good-looking and Bong (Bengali).”

According to the doctor at CritiCare, Bappi Da was suffering from multiple health issues and was admitted to the hospital for a month. Though he was discharged on Monday, his condition deteriorated on Tuesday.
