Bengali actress Rupa Dutta was arrested on Sunday afternoon for allegedly committing attention-diverting theft at the venue of the International Kolkata Book Fair, the police confirmed.
Rupa was held on the basis of suspicion when she was found dropping some purses in a garbage can. When her bag was searched, police found some more purses, a sum of 65,000 and a diary that contained an account of the money she had stolen over some time, said officers at a Salt Lake police station. “She confessed during interrogation that she had stolen purses earlier also,” an officer said on condition of anonymity.
"The woman has been arrested in connection with 'kepmari' (attention-diverting theft) and further investigation is underway to find out whether more people are connected with the crime," the officer said. Police produced Rupa at a court in Salt Lake on Sunday afternoon.
Rupa was in news in 2020 when she had wrongly accused filmmaker Anurag Kashyap of sexual harassment while sharing on social media screenshots of her conversation with another person who shared his first name with the renowned director. It was later found by the police that the messages were not from director Anurag Kashyap but another man named Anurag.
