Theatres might have started getting back to their old form with some recent movies performing extremely well at the box office, but that hasn’t stopped filmmakers from opting for OTT release. Many Hindi and South Indian filmmakers are still skipping the mainstream theatrical window and premiering their films directly on streaming platforms given their niche theme and budget. Deepika Padukone’s Gehraiyaan, Yami Gautam’s A Thursday, and Vikrant Massey, Sanya Malhotra, and Bobby Deol starrer Love Hostel are some of the recent movies that came out directly on OTT, while films such as Akshay Kumar’s Mission Cinderella, Vidya Balan-Shefali Shah’s Jalsa, Alia Bhatt’s Darlings, and the late Rishi Kapoor’s Sharmaji Namkeen are also scheduled to hit the digital screens in the coming months. Now, we hear one more film is heading for a web release.
Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Janhvi Kapoor’s crime-comedy Good Luck Jerry might take the OTT route, bypassing theatres. The makers have decided to give it a digital release and are in advanced talks with Disney+Hotstar for the same. "Aanand L Rai has got a very lucrative deal from Disney+Hotstar and he’s seriously contemplating finalising it. The paperwork will happen as soon as the finances are locked in. Rai believes Good Luck Jerry will get a better and bigger release on OTT as compared to theatres, which are already packed with big-budget movies scheduled in the coming months. Small and medium-budget Hindi films have all underperformed at the box office so far, and Rai doesn’t want his film to meet the same fate. And hence, he has decided to release the film on OTT as that would give it a wider release and more eyeballs, "a source close to the development told us.
Good Luck Jerry will mark Janhvi Kapoor’s second release on OTT after Dharma Productions’ Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, which premiered on Netflix during the first wave of the coronavirus in 2020 to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. As for Aanand L Rai, it’s his third production venture to skip theatres after Taapsee Pannu's critically-acclaimed romantic thriller, Haseen Dillruba, and the Akshay Kumar, Dhanush, and Sara Ali Khan starrer triangle love story, Atrangi Re, which premiered during Christmas weekend last year.
Good Luck Jerry is the official remake of Nayanthara’s 2018 Tamil crime-comedy, Kolamavu Kokila. Directed by debutant Siddharth Sengupta and written by Pankaj Matta, the Hindi version also stars Deepak Dobriyal, Meeta Vashishtha, Neeraj Sood, and Sushant Singh in the pivotal roles. It revolves around a happy-go-lucky young girl who gets involved in a drug racket to earn quick money. Circumstances eventually bring her entire family into the drug smuggling business. What follows next is a series of unwarranted twists and turns that make the film an interesting thriller.
