Playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, better known as KK, passed away in Kolkata late on Tuesday night after giving a concert at Gurudas College event in the city’s Nazrul Mancha. He fell ill while performing and was brought to the CMRI hospital, where was declared ‘brought dead’. However, a case of ‘unnatural death’ was registered by the Kolkata police on Wednesday and his body was sent for post-mortem at SSKM hospital, which is now complete. Soon, his body will be carried out via green corridor to the Kolkata airport where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will also arrive from Andal. The singer will be given a gun salute at the airport in presence of the CM after which his mortal remains will be brought back to Mumbai.
On the other hand, Kolkata’s mayor, Firhad Hakim has admitted that the Nazrul Mancha auditorium was packed with fans and was overcrowded. Reportedly, the auditorium had a seating capacity of around 2700 people but was packed with 7000 people. Apparently, there was much excitement over KK’s performance amidst the college students. Hakim said that KMC had decided to not allow college fest to be held at Nazrul Mancha and further said that AC was not faulty at the auditorium but it also has a limit as the auditorium was overcrowded.
Hakim further said that due to the overcrowding people felt suffocated and there was difficulty in breathing which was also a complaint that KK registered with his crew. The mayor further said that people climbed over the barricades and walls to watch the show; police were left powerless as they could not lathi charge the fans. KMDA has decided to not allow college festivals and shows to be held at Nazrul Mancha.
An eyewitness gave his statement about the singer’s health to the Kolkata Police, wherein he said that KK got injured and was taken to the hospital. However, he died in the lift itself.
