Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi wasn't just successful at the box office but won critical acclaim from critics globally. Based on the life of a brothel madam from Kamathipura, the film was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and made a business of over Rs 100 crores.
Now, the buzz has it that Gangubai Kathiawadi will be among India's official entries to the Oscars 2023. While Bhansali Productions is yet to react to reports, fans are hopeful that Alia's biographical film will represent India globally once again.
Days before Gangubai Kathiawadi's theatrical release, it got selected to be screened at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival. Reportedly, the film got a standing ovation after the end credits rolled out.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars in 2002.
Gangubai Kathiawadi, co-starring Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa, Jim Sarbh, Shantanu Maheshwari and Indira Tiwari, released on February 25.
