In India cricket and films are two things that unite the Indians. Cricket and films are as big as religions and people more often worship the cricketers and their cinema idols. However, very often we’ve seen that they very often overstep the limits and become fanatics. Something similar happened to former Indian skipper and cricketer Virat Kohli whose privacy was invaded. An unauthorized fan recorded a video of Virat’s hotel room from Australia where he is currently playing for India in the ICC T20 World cup. Virat shared the video and expressed his disappointment at being treated as a “commodity”. He requested his fans to respect the privacy of everyone and not treat them as a "commodity" for entertainment.
Sharing the video, Virat wrote a lengthy post that reads, “I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them and I’ve always appreciated that. But this video here is appalling and it’s made me feel very paranoid about my privacy. If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all?? I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy. Please respect people’s privacy and not treat them as a commodity for entertainment.”
The video gives a detailed tour of Virat’s hotel room and showcases his personal belongings, toiletries and cricket kit on display. The video was slammed by several Bollywood celebs as well such as Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Virat’s wife Anushka Sharma as well as several fans. Varun called the behaviour ‘horrible’ whereas Arjun commented, “Absolutely unethical & uncool…". Parineeti Chopra wrote, "OMFG. New level of low."
Several fans also took to the comments section and slammed the fan for breaching someone’s privacy. “This is completely wrong. We have to respect the privacy of any human even if that person is our favourite player. We do love him but we should respect his private space too," a fan said. “What the hell! Give this guy some space atleast. Come not done this is," added another.
Anushka shared the video on her own Instagram Stories and slammed the fan for his behaviour. “Have experience for incidents where fans have shown no compassion or grace in the past but this really is the worst thing. An absolute disgrace and violation of a human being and anyone who sees this and thinks ‘celebrity ho! Toh deal karna padega’ should know that you are also part of the problem. Exercising some self control helps everyone. Also, if this is happening in your bedroom then where is the line?"
