SS Rajamouli wins Best Director at New York Film Critics Circle, RRR secures 12th position in the 'Best Movies 2022' list

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli won the Best Director Award for RRR at the New York Film Critics Circle on Friday. The group is one of the first critics’ groups to weigh in on the awards season. Rajamouli’s win surprised many as his competitors included Steven Spielberg, Darron Aronofsky, Sarah Polley, and Gina Prince-Blythewood.

SS Rajamouli has added another feather to his cap. The filmmaker, who received tremendous praise for the Baahubali franchise, has won Best Director award at the New York Film Critics Circle for his latest magnum opus RRR. The biggie has also secured the 12th position in Rolling Stone's list titled '22 Best Movies of 2022'.

RRR is a pan-India feature starring Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn and others. Released in March 2022, RRR is a fictional story based on the lives of two Telugu freedom fighters, Alluri Seetharama Raju and Komaram Bheem. The film collected over 1200 crore worldwide.

After earning more than Rs 1200 crore at the worldwide box office, the film emerged as one of the most successful films at the box office in India and received rave reviews from Indian film critics. However, it was not selected as India’s official entry for Oscars 2023.
