Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas were blessed with a baby girl in January last year. They named her Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. She was born via surrogacy to the star couple. Now, in an interview with a magazine, Priyanka revealed Malti was born a full trimester before her due date. She was kept in the NICU for a couple of weeks.
Talking about Malti's 'extremely' premature birth, Priyanka recalled the scenario at the hospital in LA. She told the magazine, "I was in the OR [operating room] when she came out. She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive-care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed [in her tiny body] to intubate her."
Revealing that for the first three months, only Priyanka and Nick were allowed to visit Malti in the hospital. It was exactly when the first omicron wave hit the US. "We spent every single day with her on my chest, on my husband’s chest. I didn’t know if she would make it or not," she shared.
Priyanka further spoke about the decision to opt for surrogacy. She added, "I had medical complications, this was a necessary step, and I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months."
On January 22, 2022, Priyanka and Nick released a statement announcing the arrival of their daughter. They wrote, "We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate. We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family. Thank you so much."
