Kantara 2: Rishab Shetty starts working on the prequel, film to go on floors around June this year for a pan-India release in 2024

Rishab Shetty's Kantara was one of the greatest hits of 2022. Based in coastal Karnataka, the supernatural thriller was loved across all languages. Now, the actor-director has started working on the film's prequel. Confirming the news of Kantara 2, Hombale Films founder Vijay Kiragandur told an international publication that it will go on floors in June this year.

Vijay told the publication, "Rishab is writing the story now and has gone to the forests of coastal Karnataka with his writing associates for two months to conduct research for the film. He plans to start shooting in June, as a portion of the shoot requires the rainy season, and our intention is to give the film a pan-India release in April or May next year."

He further added, "Kantara was so successful that whatever we do next has to be big, as expectations are high. We’ll add a few names to the cast but we want to keep it authentic and similar in style and substance to the first film."

Vijay shared with the publication that Kantara 2, which is the prequel, will explore the backstory of Daiva. It will also delve deeper into "the pact with a troubled king that was intended to protect the villagers, and the nature that surrounds them."

Kantara, co-starring Sapthami Gowda, Kishore and others, released in Kannada originally. It then got versions in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
