An argument over selfies became a nightmare for Indian cricketer Pritvi Shaw as it escalated into a fight with a baseball bat and a car chase in Mumbai, according to a police complaint. Shaw has been involved in an incident in the suburbs of Mumbai, in which his friend’s car was allegedly attacked by a group of people against whom a case has been filed.
Mumbai Police told a news agency, “Oshiwara Police has registered a case against 8 persons over an alleged attack on the car of a friend of Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw after Shaw refused to take a selfie for the second time with two people.” Eight people have been named in the police case for allegedly charging at Shaw and his friend breaking the windshield of their car and demanding Rs 50,000.
Two of the people who have been named in the complaint have been identified as Shobhit Thakur and Sana or Sapna Gill. They have denied the charges and accused the cricketer of assaulting them first. As per, the complaint filed by Shaw’s friend, the fight began at a luxury hotel near Mumbai airport in the wee hours of Wednesday after two fans, a man and a woman, approached the cricketer for selfies. The cricketer complied for a few selfies but when they demanded more and refused to back off, Shaw called his friend and the manager of the hotel to have the fans removed.
After being kicked out, the fans waited outside the hotel for Shaw with a few others armed with baseball bats and mobbed him. When Shaw and his friend took off in their car, they chased the car, intercepted it at a traffic signal near Oshiwara and broke the windshield, demanded Rs 50,000 and threatened to file a ‘fake police case’ against the cricketer.
A video that has gone viral on social media, shows Shaw on the street at night, in the presence of police personnel. The person filming the video can be heard telling Sapna to stay away and telling the police that it was Shaw and his friends who attacked them. As per media reports, Ali Kashif Khan, the lawyer for Sapna Gill, has alleged that Prithvi Shaw assaulted the woman. He said, “Sapna has been kept in the Oshiwara police station. She is not being allowed to go even for medical examination.”
