Maarna mat apne aap ko: Smriti Irani gets emotional remembering her appeal to Sushant Singh Rajput, says 'I felt like, why did he not call me?'

Sushant Singh Rajput's demise was an unfathomable incident. At the age of 34, he passed away at his Bandra residence. His untimely death was by suicide. It's been almost 3 years without Sushant but people close to him are yet to wrap their heads around it. During a conversation on Neelesh Misra's The Slow Interview, actress-turned-politician Smriti Irani recalled the unfortunate day when Sushant died by suicide.

Smriti, who was close to Sushant, got emotional as she spoke about receiving the news of his demise on June 14, 2020. "The day Sushant died, I was on a VC (video conference). There were many people. But I just couldn’t (continued)....I said stop it. I felt like, why did he not call me? He should have called once. I had told that boy, ‘Tum yaar maarna mat apne aap ko' (Please don’t kill yourself)."

She struggled to hold back her tears. Smriti then shared, "Instantly, I was scared for Amit Sadh. I called him and asked him what he is up to. I knew, kuch gadbad karega bachcha. Usne mujhe kaha, mujhe nahi rehna, kya kiya is idiot ne. I got the sense that something is wrong. He asked me, 'You don’t have work?' I said, 'I do, but just let’s talk'."

After the news of Sushant's demise broke, Smriti tweeted, "I have no words , no understanding of why you left the way you did. From a bright young kid who came to Balaji to a star who made the Nation swoon.. you had come a long way and had many more miles to go. You will be missed #SushantSinghRajput gone too soon .."
